What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

Often, the terms psychologist and psychiatrist are used interchangeably. The reason behind such use of terms is that both deal with the brain functions, thoughts, feelings and psychological health and well being of a person. However, even though, they are largely related, they are poles apart in terms of qualifications, practice and salary.
Psychologists do their major in psychology. They attend their training in counselling psychology as well. They mainly deal with the counselling section of a patient’s treatment. If the patient requires medication, Wollongong psychologists refer him to a psychiatrist.
A psychiatrist, on the other hand, has to go to medical school post which his residency involves training in psychiatry. Therefore psychiatrists prescribe medications. They both often work in sync with one another. Sometimes, a psychologist might refer him to a psychiatrist for some medication and a psychiatrist might feel the patient requires medication and refer him to a psychologist.

Common misunderstanding about counselling and their clarifications

Most of us deal with some or the other problems at some point in our lives. Sometimes, we discover some of them are persistent and deny going away with time or ignorance. At this point, any healthy person will ask you to visit to a psychologist. But more often than not, you won’t. There are a lot of misconceptions associated with counselling which keeps people from seeking help from time to time. Let us look at a few of them.
  • The most common ideology that keeps people from visiting psychologists is the idea that counselling is for major issues like chronic depression. The truth is counselling is meant for anyone who wishes to speak about their problems without the pressure of being judged.
  • Some people also think Counsellors are just there to dupe them. However, you can speak to innumerable people who have benefitted from counselling once they lost the fear and apprehensions.
  • Lastly, people are scared their secrets will come out in the open. However, every ethical psychologist follows a confidentiality agreement which prohibits him from divulging any information the client shares with him.

How to get your partner to opt for relationship counselling Illawarra

Relationships may start off as exciting and fun but as time passes and things get real, even the most adorable couples face problems. And just like life’s ups and downs, relationships can be worked on and mended given there’s desire and will. Sometimes, due to the lack of awareness of counselling (Wollongong) and its effects, it gets difficult to get one’s partner to agree to try counselling. People often complain their partners don’t believe in the concept and do not wish to pursue the help of an expert to mend their relationship. Here are a few things you may do.
  • First of all, make sure you wish to attend counselling sessions with an open mind. If you ask your partner to accompany you but give him an idea that it is his fault, then most likely, he will not be interested.
  • Focus on the positives. Explain to your partner how relationship counselling in Illawarra is simply a tool that you wish to use to be a better partner/spouse.
  • You can also tell him how the sessions work. Tell him how counselling simply gives you means and ways to communicate better and understand each other’s needs as a partner.
